Awash Bank S.C, Ethiopia’s private financial institution, has partnered with Mastercard to launch the Awash pre-paid cards.

The Mastercard-branded international prepaid plastic card allows customers and merchants to make and receive payments online worldwide.

The card offers flexibility and convenience, enabling contact or contactless transactions on ATMs and POS machines.

Customers can withdraw cash, pay at POS terminals, and shop online at any Mastercard-accepted merchant locations globally. The virtual card also allows for online purchases at any Mastercard-accepted website worldwide.

One standout feature is the ability for customers to load funds onto the card at Forex bureaus, making it ideal for international payments and travel expenses.

Yohannes Merga, Senior Chief Marketing Officer at Awash Bank, highlighted the bank’s commitment to providing secure financial solutions, and empowering travelers to manage their finances while exploring the world.

In addition to the card, Awash Bank will introduce Mastercard’s Payment Gateway Services (MPGS), allowing local merchants to accept international payments online.

Shehryar Ali, Senior Vice President at Mastercard, emphasized the collaboration’s role in promoting financial inclusion across Africa and providing consumers with safe and convenient payment options.

The Awash Mastercard is available to travelers above 18 years old, who can obtain the card by visiting a Forex Bureau and opening a bank account with essential travel documents.

This initiative aligns with Ethiopia’s digital transformation strategy, facilitating smooth cross-border payments and enhancing the country’s financial landscape.
