In an effort to address the challenges faced by young people in Kenya and Uganda, Mastercard and Hatua.net on Thursday partnered to empower youth with essential skills needed to succeed in today’s competitive job market.

The collaboration will focus on providing educational opportunities to talented students in some of the most challenged areas of Nairobi and Kampala.

While primary school in Kenya and Uganda is free, secondary school fees and related costs are often unaffordable for those living in slums, preventing many students from fulfilling their potential.

Hatua.net works to break this cycle of deprivation by sponsoring students and providing them with the opportunity to continue their education.

Since 2010, Hatua.net has helped over 500 students continue their education, with more than 90 per cent being admitted directly into university.

Recognizing Hatua.net’s focus on identifying talented youngsters who may want to work in the STEM industries, Mastercard has committed $50,000 to co-create a dedicated program that includes internships, graduate programs, and real-world employment skill training at Mastercard.

The partnership aims to provide scholarships, graduate program placements, and internship opportunities to enable access to education and training.

Additionally, a mentorship program supported by Mastercard’s Talent Management Team will deliver practical skills such as interview training, CV reviews, job application assistance, Microsoft Office application training, and communication skills.

The importance of having the right skill set to secure meaningful employment is underscored by statistics, which show that young people in Kenya, mainly secondary school and college graduates, were the hardest hit by joblessness at the end of 2022.

Soft skills, education/training, and hands-on experience were identified as the top three requirements for employment in entry-level jobs in both the formal and informal sectors.

The partnership exemplifies a commitment to creating a more equitable and prosperous future for all by providing young people with the necessary networks, tools, and solutions to reach their potential and achieve career success.
