MTN Rwanda on Tuesday has partnered with Bboxx to bring digital connectivity by widening access to smartphones in Rwanda.

By combining their expertise and shared vision, Bboxx and MTN Rwanda aim to make essential technology more accessible to all Rwandans. This partnership will help bridge the digital divide and provide internet access to communities that were previously unconnected.

One of the main obstacles to achieving the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) is the low penetration of smartphones. Despite having 99% network coverage, Rwanda’s smartphone penetration rate stands at just 23.5%.

This initiative aligns perfectly with the Rwandan government and MTN Rwanda’s “Connect Rwanda” goal, which aims to ensure that every household has access to a smartphone.

Bboxx’s pay-as-you-go smartphone service, Bboxx Connect, will simplify the smartphone payment process for customers and provide a tool for financial education, ultimately helping them build creditworthiness.

This will strengthen the digital economy and fuel socio-economic development across the country.

Customers using Bboxx Connect can choose from flexible repayment plans of six or twelve months. Payments can be made through MTN Mobile Money’s short code 182242#.

In return, MTN Rwanda will provide SIM cards and leverage its extensive 99% network coverage in Rwanda. Additionally, new Bboxx Connect customers will receive a starter data pack of 1GB per month for three months.

The partnership will also enable Bboxx’s existing suite of Internet of Things (IoT)-enabled household appliances to connect with telecommunications services provided by MTN Rwanda.

As a data-driven super platform, Bboxx is already making a significant impact by offering affordable and innovative products, utilities, and financial services in ten African countries, including Rwanda, Kenya, Togo, the DRC, and Nigeria. Furthermore, Bboxx provides off-grid solar home systems, supplying electricity to 10% of households in Rwanda.

The collaboration with MTN Rwanda, the leading telecommunications market player in the country with nearly seven million users, represents a promising alliance that will greatly advance digital connectivity in the region.

Mansoor Hamayun, Co-Founder and CEO of Bboxx, expressed his enthusiasm for the partnership, stating that it demonstrates their commitment to unlocking potential through technological innovation.

With the extensive reach of MTN Rwanda, Bboxx Connect will scale up to enhance the affordability and accessibility of smartphones for customers across Rwanda.

Hamayun emphasized that this collaboration is not only an innovative business venture but also a significant step forward in the global effort to bridge the digital divide and make affordable, life-changing technology accessible to all.

Mapula Bodibe, CEO of MTN Rwanda, added that everyone should have access to the benefits of a connected life. Through the partnership with Bboxx, MTN is making this vision a reality by expanding access to affordable smartphones nationwide.

The collaboration aims to create a more connected world, enabling individuals and communities to access the power of the internet and thrive in the digital age.
